Previous FBI Director James Comey Files Not Guilty Plea to Accusations of Falsehoods Lawmakers
Previous FBI head James Comey has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to US legislators and hindering a lawmaking procedure.
His attorney entered the plea on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.
The defense lawyer announced he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple reasons including that his client, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.
James Comey was formally accused just days after the former president pushed his top legal official to move forward against him.
Court Developments
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the judge they aimed to file various motions to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, stating the prosecution was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully assigned to take over the proceedings.
Mr Comey's proceedings was initially overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into an additional political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.
Courtroom Atmosphere
The former director appeared in good spirits as he walked into the legal venue on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen, a US lawyer who the previous administration terminated.
Following the reading to the magistrate recite his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was asked if he grasped the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the proceedings.
Previous Events
James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the time, the director was leading an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.
While in office, James Comey triggered a backlash from Democrats when he announced just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.
Present Charges
The federal government assert Mr Comey gave untrue statements to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he provided false information to the Senate by saying he had not permitted a person at the agency to disclose to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.
Government lawyers also allege James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and delay" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.
Individual Responses
Through a recording Mr Comey shared to his social media after he was accused, he said he was not guilty and charged Trump of acting like a "autocrat".
"Our household have understood for years that there are ramifications to challenging Mr Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a court case."
These allegations against James Comey came after Donald Trump published on social media demanding his top legal official, the attorney general, charge Mr Comey and other people.
